How to Keep Doing What You're Doing

What’s interesting in leadership is that at some point you might look at your organization or a particular structure and ask yourself, how can we maintain this? Unfortunately this is a place that many leaders stay.

Growth is much more fun than maintenance. It’s also messier and way more complex. Here are some sure fire ways to make sure you maintain exactly what you are doing and not move to another level.

1. Stay the same

Change and growth go hand in hand. Change is always hard. It means different and different is scary. As a leader if you stay the same you will maintain and will reach a limit to your growth.

2. Don’t ask questions and expect answers

Have you ever been in an environment where questions are asked, but that person doesn’t really want answers? Or do you know someone that isn’t willing to ask questions to help or get better. I’ve been at both of these places and let me just tell you, they get old.

I have to make sure that if growth is what I’m after that I’m always asking questions and listening to the answers. If you want to maintain, do neither.

3. Don’t look anywhere else for help

I am privileged, lucky, crazy, to have some amazing ministry connections. If I’m honest, I don’t talk to them very often. Maybe it’s fear, maybe it’s laziness, maybe it’s knowing I’m inadequate. But if I’m not proactive about reaching out for help, then I will miss out on some amazing growth opportunities.

If I just concentrate on my stuff then I will maintain really, really well.

Ultimately, God gives the growth, we put in what He gives to us and the results are His. But there are some definite ways that we can stop or stifle growth.
