University Wants Unbelievers to Lead Christian Club

Charisma News reported yesterday that officials from the University of North Carolina-Greensboro are requiring a Christian club on campus to allow unbelievers to join and be leaders in order for the club to be formally recognized by the university. UNCG has a non-discrimination policy that contains an exemption for religious or political groups, but the university says the club is “not religious,” i.e., they are not affiliated with any church, and therefore they do not qualify for the exemption. A lawsuit has been filed against the school with the Alliance Defense Fund defending the student group.

“Saying that a Christian club isn’t religious is flatly absurd, especially when the university has granted its belief-based exception to numerous other clubs,” says legal counsel from ADF. “The First Amendment forbids the government from determining what is and what is not ‘religious,’ yet the university is doing exactly this by telling a Christian group that it is not religious. The Constitution protects the right of all student groups to employ belief-based criteria in selecting their members and leaders.”

No word on when the suit will be heard by the U. S. District Court for the Middle District of North Carolina.
