Greg Laurie Pleads for a "Return to Biblical Preaching"

At a conference in Southern California this week, evangelist and pastor Greg Laurie expressed concern that churches aren’t making the message the focal point of the church service, and preachers aren’t presenting the Gospel as they should.

As one of eight speakers invited to present at the Resurgence Conference at Mariner’s Church in Irvine, Calif., this week, Laurie said he feared churches are moving away from preaching as they surround the message with media and other elements.

“People will develop an appetite for what you feed them. If you build your church on giving, if you build your church on guest artists, if you build your church on razzle-dazzle stuff, that’s what they are going to come wanting. But if you teach your people to love the Word of God that’s what they will come hungry for and they will come with their Bibles and they will be ready to learn. We are called to do this. This is what our culture needs today,” said Laurie. “All these other things that we utilize in the church have a place, but I believe the main event at every service should be the preaching and teaching of the Word.”

As reported by The Christian Post, Laurie pastors Harvest Christian Fellowship in Riverside and is best known for his evangelistic Harvest Crusades held in stadiums and arenas across the U.S. More than 4.7 million people have attended one of them, and nearly 400,000 people have made decisions of faith as a result.
