Seven Leadership Truths I’ve Learned from Jesus

4. He Was Tempted.

Jesus was tempted just like we are. Don’t be fooled into thinking that people in ministry don’t struggle with temptation. Oftentimes, we as ministry leaders struggle more with temptation. After fasting, Satan tempted Jesus several times. Jesus used the Word of God to overcome the temptation. Stay in the Word, and when you are tempted, remember what Paul said in 1 Corinthians 10:13 … “No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to humanity. God is faithful, and He will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you can handle, but with the temptation He will also provide a way of escape so that you are able to bear it.”  Look to Jesus when you are tempted. He is the “way of escape” when we feel weak.

5. He Felt Pain.

Jesus was no stranger to physical and emotional pain. From the emotional pain of betrayal to the physical agony of the cross, God understands pain. We are not alone in our pain. If Jesus felt pain during His ministry, rest assured that it’s normal to experience pain in your ministry as well. Before ascending into Heaven, Jesus told the disciples, “I will send a comforter.” We have the Holy Spirit inside us that comforts us when we hurt.

6. He Needed Rest.

Even Jesus understood the importance of taking care of Himself. Whether it was in a boat during a storm, or at the end of an evening, Jesus slept. Whether it was at the table as an invited guest, or at a fireside with His disciples, He ate food. Whether it was at the well in Samaria, or on the cross on Calvary’s hill, He still got thirsty. Jesus had to take care of Himself in order to be healthy. Don’t get so caught up doing everything else that you neglect your health. People need you to be healthy so you can be there for them.

7. He Took Time Away From Ministry to Pray.

Many times we see that Jesus got away by Himself and prayed. If prayer was important to God, it must be important for our lives as well. Don’t get so busy “doing ministry” that you neglect spending time alone with God.
