It’s common Christian vernacular to exhort unbelievers to “choose God” so that their sins may be forgiven, the righteousness of Christ may be imputed to them, and that they may be sealed with Christ for eternity. But is that how it really happens? Us choosing THEN God working? John Piper of Desiring God ministries offers this short video as his explanation to this question.
Jesus states in no uncertain terms as he addresses the religious leaders that “you do not believe because you are not among my sheep.” (John 10:26) It does not say “because you do not believe you are not among my sheep, but rather not being a part of His sheep is the cause of unbelief. According to Piper, God’s choosing of who will be rescued from rebellion and wrath is not based on faith that he foresees. If you are watching this video, and you have faith in Christ and have been united in Him, it is because you were chosen before the foundation of the world. Jesus’s death, burial, and resurrection and our subsequent union with Him were both in the mind of God before we were ever even born.
