Negative Effects of Grandparents Raising Grandchildren: An Overview

3. Emotional challenges

Some older people struggle with anxiety or depression. The stress of raising children adds up. Meanwhile, children who aren’t living with their parents may need extra emotional support.

4. Social challenges

Grandparents who become parents may feel isolated from peers. They may no longer have time for social activities and hobbies. Children also may feel different from peers who have parents handy for school functions and day-to-day interactions.

5. Legal challenges

Custody and guardianship disputes can arise when grandparents are raising grandchildren. Another obstacle may be obtaining permission to seek medical care for grandkids.

6. Access challenges

All the challenges listed above can combine to impede access for grandparents raising grandkids. For example, their health may prevent them from driving, so children may not be able to participate in extracurricular activities. Or grandparents’ unfamiliarity with technology and social programs may prevent them from obtaining helpful services.

Of course, it’s not all bad news. Grandparents raising grandchildren has some positive aspects too! As behavioral pediatric researcher Dr. Andrew Adesman says, “Grandparents who step in and care for their grandchildren are doing amazing work. It’s vital they assume these responsibilities when the need arises, and they should all be commended given the challenges they have.”
