More Advent Activities for Children’s Ministry
6. Birthday Party for Jesus
Toward the end of Advent, host a party to celebrate Jesus’ arrival. Decorate the room, bake a birthday cake, and sing kid-friendly carols. Share or re-enact the Christmas story. Have children bring gifts for Jesus, such as toys to donate or drawings of what they love about him.
Why it works: Children love birthday parties, and this reinforces that Christmas is all about Jesus. By giving gifts, kids express their love for their friend and Savior.
7. Road to Bethlehem Obstacle Course
Create an obstacle course representing the journey Mary and Joseph took to Bethlehem. Children can “walk” along a winding path, dodge “rocks,” or carry something heavy. Set up stations with short readings or mini-discussions about the journey. Then conclude at a manger, where children learn about Jesus’ birth.
Why it works: This hands-on activity lets kids engage with the Christmas story.
8. Devotional Jar: Advent Scriptures
Fill a jar with slips of paper, each with one Bible verse about Jesus or Christmas. Each day, a child picks a verse and then reads it and reflects. Discuss each Scripture as a family or group. Ask, “How does this verse show God’s love?”
Why it works: This emphasizes that Christmas is Bible-based and true.
9. Do-It-Yourself Nativity Scene
Provide felt, clay, or paper so kids can create figures for a Nativity scene. Each week, introduce new characters, ending with baby Jesus on Christmas Eve. As you add each figure, discuss its role.
Why it works: By crafting the scene piece by piece, children discover how Christmas unfolded.
10. Follow the Star Treasure Hunt
This activity focuses on the wise men’s journey to Jesus. Hide a star in your home, classroom, or church each day. Have kids search for it. When they find it, share part of the Nativity story. On Christmas Eve, the star leads kids to the manger or a special place representing Jesus.
Why it works: Kids love the challenge of a treasure hunt. This activity reminds them of the joy and effort of seeking Jesus, just as the Magi did.
These Advent activities for children’s ministry help kids embrace the joy, anticipation, and love at the heart of Christmas. Help little learners experience Jesus’ birth in memory-making ways. Share these ideas with parents so families can celebrate God’s greatest gift this holiday season!
