When There's Not Enough Help

As a kidmin leader, how many times do you walk into the weekend a little nervous (okay, a LOT nervous) about how the weekend is going to pan out?  And it all centers around one thing…

Not enough volunteers.

How do you respond?  How do you lead your faithful team of volunteers through another weekend where you’re running ‘red line?’

Here are two areas where I focus…teach…and cling.  They’re not profound.  And some will read this and dismiss.  That’s okay.  It doesn’t work for everyone…and I’m not the expert.  Just another practitioner in the field.

Focus #1:  Thermometer vs. Thermostat

I remind myself and share with volunteers that we have a choice to function as a thermometer or thermostat.  One reflects the temperature; one sets the temperature.  As the leaders in fpKids, we want to function as thermostats and set the tone for our areas.  We don’t want to function as thermometers that reflect the stress in the room.

It’s a quick, great way to set the bar for the hour.

Focus #2:  God’s Not Surprised

God isn’t surprised by the number of kids that show up today.  And He’s not surprised by the number of volunteers either.  We’re going to do everything we can to ‘set the table’ for God to work.  But ultimately, it’s His ministry…His work…His plan.  In His sovereignty, He knows how things will play out.  Safer in His hands than mulling it over in our minds.  So I like to remind myself and my volunteers that God’s not surprised.  He’s got this, and we can do anything for an hour.

That’s it.

I don’t dwell.  I don’t worry.  I just roll through it.
