Short-Selling God

I got a solid kick in the pants last week.  And it felt good.

In conversation with my Executive Pastor, Josh Whitehead, he challenged me in my prayer life.  He was graciously referring to his own prayer life and what God was teaching him in this season.  Yet, in typical God-fashion, Josh’s moment of sharing was kicking my butt.

You see, Sunday always comes.  That never fails.  Sunday is well on it’s way and we’ve got to be ready for the kids God leads to us.  Easter is only weeks away and this is a high-attendance weekend where we have one more opportunity to help our CEO’s (Christmas & Easter Only) find a church home.  Summer Camp is right around the corner and there is more left undone than done.  Transition weekend trails closely behind…

We could go on, couldn’t we?

Within all of these activities/events, I believe we’ve made great changes in our approach to the family to better equip them for the daily rhythms of leading their kids to love Jesus.  However… if my overall vision is short sighted then my approach to fpKIDS is handicapped.

You see, I am reminded that today we live in a unique time.  Population projections estimate that we will exceed 9Billion by 2050.   In addition, we have the most efficient methods for communicating across the globe than ever before.

We possess the most eternity-changing message known to man.

With access to some of the most efficient, effective methods of communicating this message across the globe.

To the most people that have ever walked the planet.

That’s sobering.

Now… back to fpKIDS.  What’s my vision for kids within fpKIDS?

That they learn how to love their God with all their heart, mind and strength?

Absolutely

That they enter into a relationship with Jesus at a young age?

Without doubt

That they learn to be a walking testimony of Life found only in Jesus?

C’mon!

But, what if I believed…

That the generation of kids I see today will grow up to see the Great Commission fulfilled?

How does that change my approach?  How does that influence my conversations?  How does that impact my prayers?

This really has me jacked up.  Although it doesn’t change the reality that Sunday is well on it’s way with Easter, Summer Camp and fall 2011 trailing close behind… my approach to these things might look different if I operate under the assumption that God desires to see the Great Commission fulfilled.  And that He’s poised a generation of followers to make it happen.  My posture towards the Truth that we impart every week is distinctly different… distinctly divine.

Dang.  My vision is too small.  I’ve been short-selling God.
