Axioms for KidMin #2 – Make The Big Ask
Bill Hybels says this in his book Axiom:
Leadership is a lot about asking. After casting bold visions, leaders ask people to help make them become a reality. Leaders describe pressing problems that are imperiling mission achievement and then ask people to devote their best thinking and most innovative ideas to solve them.
This is as true in Children’s Ministry as anywhere else in the church. We ask a lot from a lot of people. It’s part of leadership…or should be. Too often we don’t ask.
- We don’t ask the “perfect” volunteer to volunteer.
- We don’t ask senior leadership for clarification of the vision.
- We don’t ask our team to maintain standards of excellence.
- We don’t ask fill in the blank
As a result, we end up working ourselves to death because we don’t have enough volunteers. We end up short-changing our kids because senior leadership has no idea we need more resources. We end up with childcare instead of children’s ministry because our team doesn’t really know how to do it right.
