Axioms for KidMin #6 – A Bias Toward Action

Most leaders would be considered “action” oriented people. They make things happen. They move. They have a hard time being complacent.

Bill Hybels, in his book Axiom, says this about himself:

Personally, I’ve never understood inactivity. Why a person would sit when he could soar, spectate when he could play, or atrophy when he could develop is beyond me.” (page 134)

As the Dad of two teenage boys, I sometimes hear about obstacles to what they want to do, or that they don’t know how to do something I’ve asked them to do, or something similar. My response, more often than not, is to make something happen. Figure it out and get it done.

I would say the same for Children’s Ministry leaders. Figure it out and get it done.

Do you see an area of weakness in your ministry? Fix it. Are you lacking volunteers for your team? Find them. Are people unprepared for effective ministry? Train them. Have parents abdicated spiritual responsibility to you in the church? Equip them and give it back.

Now, I know what you’re thinking…I can’t do everything! And you are right. In fact, we’ve talked many times about the need to take care of yourself in ministry. So part of the action may be to build & equip a team to take action alongside you.

The problem is, I see too many KidMin leaders who are content just to get through Sunday. As long as no one is hurt, no kids get lost and the Pastor and parents are happy at the end, everything is good. Really?

That can’t be good enough. We must be intentional, proactive and action oriented in pursuing the God given vision for our ministry. It won’t happen overnight, and I know the obstacles you face. Take action anyway.

Make a plan, step by step, to take action and make the things happen that need to happen.

Have a bias toward ACTION!
