Eyes Alight with Gratitude

A guest post by Karen Apple

I’m a perpetual kid watcher. Their words and actions amuse, enchant, occasionally annoy, but always instruct.

I sat eating my fast food feast when the face of a little girl caught my eye. Her eyes were alight with joy and gratitude as her mom placed a hamburger and fries on the table in front of her.

Mom, it’s a REAL meal with regular fries and no toy.”  She clapped her hands together as she exclaimed, “Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!”

A small, personally meaningful action elicited a joyous and grateful response.

I thought about her the rest of the day and wondered about my own attitude.  “Replace my attitude of entitlement with joyous wonder at your goodness, Lord.  May my gratitude for your large and small gifts be reflected in my eyes and my actions.  Give me a hunger for your Word and a heart like the little girl grateful to eat a grown up meal.”

Each Thanksgiving I remember a little girl whose eyes were alive with gratitude and I wonder about my own “baby blues”.

“Be joyful always, pray continually; give thanks in all things,
for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” 1 Thessalonians 5:18
