Sparking Your Creativity

In ministry, sometimes the grind of it all can you down. Whether it’s coming up with another leadership training or going through attendance numbers again, it can bog you down. It’s important to know that you need times to refresh and clear your head. So today I’m going to share some things that help to spark my creativity and I hope that you are willing to share some of yours.

Here we go.

1. Read thought provoking books

Reading books is a great thing. But reading the right books is even better. It’s important to read books that push the edge of your thinking because it helps you think bigger and better. Let’s face it. The authors that we really like, sometimes regurgitate a lot of the things that we’ve read in previous books.

Here are a few books that have pushed my thinking this year:

Dreaming of More – Family Ministry

Gospel Centered Discipleship – Sanctification

The Effective Executive – Management and Leadership

Pick those up and be challenged today.

2. Hang out with creative people

I have the privilege of working with some of the most creative people that this world has to offer. They are amazing. I always come away impressed with their ideas. When you connect with creative people, then you become creative. It’s a big reason why parents must think about picking their child’s friends.

Ask them big questions and let them talk. Listen to their insight and how they think about things. It might help you see some flaws in your own perspective.

3. Get out of your box

Cliche. I know. But it’s so true. First you have to be aware of your boxes. A few of my boxes I like to live in:

  • My office
  • Traditional family perspective
  • Colors – I like blue and gray and black
  • Strategy of communication

These are a few of the boxes that I stay in. It’s so eye opening when you take a leap and jump out of the box.

What are some ways that you spark your creativity as a leader?
