How Do You Teach Your Kids the Bible?

Just a simple question today . . . How do you teach your kids the bible? What’s more important: that they hear the bible, that it’s taught practically, or that they know the architecture of the Bible so that they can use it?

Just like teaching a child to give, teaching a child to read the Bible is really important! Here are a few things that you should probably do when teaching your kids the Bible.

1. Read it. More than once.

If this is a new habit that you are trying to establish in your household, it’s going to take awhile to stick. In fact, most studies say that it takes 21 repeated times in order to form a new habit. So do it regularly.

2. When your kids have a question, go to the Bible for the answer.

Saying things like, What does the Bible say about that?, or I think the Bible talks about that, let’s find out. Teach your children how to search for answers in the Bible. Do you have commentaries, dictionaries, or concordances in your home? Pick some up today and help them learn to search in the Bible.

Where to Find It in the Bible (A to Z Series) is a great place to start!

3. Get them a Bible that they will actually read.

The quality of Bibles for children have dramatically risen over the past 10 years. There are a number of bibles for kids, I recommend The Jesus Storybook Bible: Every Story Whispers His Name but also as they get older get them Bibles that help them look forward. Sam Luce wrote a great post that I will probably never forget about a Bible plan for children.

I can’t wait to show my son the Bibles that I had and to talk through with him how to read the Bible and show him how it really does provide the guidance for our lives.

4. Teach from the Bible in your ministry

Bring a Bible to the stage every time that you teach. Read from it rather than your notes (even if you stick your notes inside your bible). Provide Bibles in your ministry for kids and help them to walk through reading the Bible together in your services.

But in your ministry context or in your home, how do you teach your kids the bible?
