Top 10 Tips to Succeed in Children's Ministry

10. Always Give God the Glory – “Don’t believe your own press!”  It can be easy to accept the accolades when things go well.  We must constantly be intentional about pointing to God as the real reason for any success we experience.

9. Never Give Up on a Kid – I know sometimes it can seem hopeless for a particular kid – attitudes, behaviors, etc.  God never gives us on me so how can I give up on a kid?

8. Reach Out to those on the Edge – On the flip side, some kids are easy to love.  The are engaging, friendly, outgoing, etc.  We need to be attentive to look for those that are sitting on the outside.  Make the extra effort to draw them in and get them connected.

7. Connect with Parents – The #1 influence in the life of a child is their parents.  If we want to have a lasting impact on the child we must be intentional about building relationships with parents.

6. Avoid Causing Conflict between Parents and Kids – Remember there are always two sides to the story.  Be careful not to take sides and create conflict between parents and their children.

5. Accept Kids Where they Are – Don’t expect kids to be at a certain level spiritually, emotionally or intellectually.  Determine where they are and that is our starting point.

4. Attend Kid’s Events – If we want to build relationships we need to be involved.

3. Create a Diverse Ministry – It’s easy to create a ministry that revolves around our likes and interests.  Being intentional about stretching outside our comfort zone and it will lead to reaching a wider audience.

2. Remember it’s God’s Ministry – It’s been said that we should work as if everything depends on us and pray as if everything depends on God.  Well guess what?   He is in control and we need to be reminded of that occasionally.  However, that is not an excuse to be lazy…we should give our best to everything He has called us to do.

1. Have Fun! – This should go without saying.  Serving with kids and teens should be FUN!  If you enjoy working with kids and you enjoy serving in ministry it should show.  Let the joy of the Lord flow through all that you do.
