This incredible teacher is on a seemingly impossible mission in one of the toughest neighborhoods in the country. The kids in the Bronx know violence, death, sadness, abandonment, loneliness, and responsibility.
When Lindsay’s middle school students go home after school, many of them go home to shelters or to homes where they are the parent. Lindsay treasures her morning commute because it’s a time where she fills herself with the truth. She says knowing God loves her helps her to do her job well.
Her students haven’t been loved well and they don’t know how to trust because they’ve been hurt so much. This is why she teaches.
Lindsay shares, “On the first day of school, the first thing I tell them is ‘I’ve been thinking about you all summer. I love you already. You may not believe this, but you can’t earn my love. You could make straight ‘As’ all year and have perfect behavior all year, or you can get detention three times a week and I’m gonna love you the same.’ And then I spend all year trying to prove it.”
