Blake Shelton recently surprised fans by releasing a deeply Christian song, “Savior’s Shadow,” off his upcoming album If I’m Honest.
You probably know Blake Shelton from the hit show The Voice, or from his tabloid romance with pop star girlfriend, Gwen Stefani, or maybe you’re actually a country fan?
I’m not one to go crazy over a mainstream artist who does something “Christian.” In fact, I’m usually skeptical, but, and hold on to your seat for this, it’s actually really good.
The lyrics from the first verse serve as a worship session on God’s grace and lovingkindness:
I’m standing in my savior’s shadow/He is watching over me
I feel the rain/I hear the thunder/As He cries for me
And standing in my savior’s shadow/Grace will lead to where I’m free
I take His hand/We walk together/His light shines on me
Co-written with Jessi Alexander and Jon Randall, the song idea came from a dream Shelton had about God.
“At a very dark time in my life last year, I dreamed the first verse of this song. I woke up and immediately wrote it down. Now, looking back, I know it was God’s way of telling me that he’s here and things are gonna be OK,” Shelton shared in a press release.
