Billy Graham’s daughter, Anne Graham Lotz, made a shocking statement on Thursday at the Family Research Council’s “Watchmen on the Wall” conference. Lotz mentioned she thought her father still being alive “had to do with the Return of Jesus.” Even though the comment was in no way the focus of her speech, it was shocking nonetheless.
Now in case you are tempted to quote Matthew 24:36 at her, Lotz went on to clarify her statement in an interview after her speech by saying, “My father’s life is very unique. His life in ministry will never be equaled. The fact that he is still on this planet at 97 years of age, that is not an accident. God is not whimsical and He does everything very intentionally. The fact that my father is still here, God is holding him for a reason.” Furthermore, she said “only God would know,” when commenting on the timing and significance of her father’s eventual death.
Lotz said perhaps when her father passes, “the Gospel will be preached to the whole world.” She explains, “Every news outlet, I would think, they won’t be able to talk about Billy Graham without talking about the Gospel, I wouldn’t think unless they do contortions,” she stated. “So, maybe God is holding him for that particular moment in time, in timing for things that will happen at the very end of this age.”
Although her words may come as a shock to some, Lotz was not presumptuous enough to call them a “word from the Lord.” In her opening statements, she prayed God would guard her words and ensure she would not speak something God wouldn’t want her to say.
Lotz’s speech focused on the need for believers to repent and “brace for God’s hand of protection and hand of favor to be lifted off America.” She read from the latter half of Romans chapter 1, pointing out specific practices that evoke God’s wrath. Practices she believes America has repeatedly partaken in. This is certainly not the first time Lotz has warned of God’s judgment that is coming for America.
Lotz’s words to be diligent, to repent and to understand the urgency of the times are reminiscent of Jesus’ words to his followers, shortly before he was crucified: “Therefore, stay awake, for you do not know on what day your Lord is coming” (Matthew 24:42).
May the Lord find us doing his will when he returns.
