When asked if he ever thought his small church plant outside of Sydney, Australia, would grow to include over 100,000 followers worldwide, Brian Houston is the first to say “not in my wildest dreams.”
Houston is probably equally surprised about the popularity of the bands that have been birthed in his church. Namely, Hillsong UNITED, whose hit song “Oceans” has stayed for a stunning 48 weeks at the top spot on Billboard’s Hot Christian Songs chart, starting in December 2013.
“Oceans” is featured on the band’s newest album Of Dirt and Grace, and will likely make an appearance in the film soon to be released about them. Hillsong: Let Hope Rise is due out September 16 and takes a look at the incredible rise to fame the band has experienced, which many claim could have only been accomplished with God’s favor.
Earlier this week, the band was invited to perform live on the Today Show. The hosts, Kathie Lee Gifford and Hoda Kotb, even bring attention to the band’s widely popular music video which was shot on the Sea of Galilee.
Hillsong UNITED, and “Oceans” in particular, seem to have a pull among a secular audience as well as the Christian world. Hence the appearance on the Today Show.
