Season 6 of ‘The Chosen’: A Taste of Suffering
Vanessa Benavente, who portrays Jesus’ mother Mary, recounted the difficulty of being distraught for days and weeks at a time. “I didn’t want her to be just crying,” she said of her role. “And I had to find levels, different levels, and when is she tired of crying? When is she just not getting any tears out?”
Jonathan Roumie, who plays Jesus, shared that Season 6 was “harder than I was anticipating” and “the hardest thing I’ve ever done in my life.” He added, “But anything with such great weight and grace attached to it…should be hard. It shouldn’t be easy.”
Dallas Jenkins, creator and director of “The Chosen,” said it seemed appropriate that Season 6, which is about Christ’s suffering, was “the hardest we’ve ever done.” He continued, “All the different locations. We’ve been going through a lot in our [crew] family, with health crises.”
“So this was a season that I think God just really wanted us to experience that we can never fully experience his suffering,” said Jenkins, “but we get a taste of it. And I think that’s okay.”
Despite the challenges, Jenkins said, “I do know that it was worth it. I do know that this Season [6] is going to change lives all over the world.” Because the show’s seventh and final season is about “renewal and life and resurrection,” Jenkins joked that he hopes it will be “pain-free” to create.
The first five seasons of “The Chosen” are available to watch on the show’s free app.
