Russell Moore: Evangelicals Honor MLK Because He’s Dead

And Moore warned that a failure to speak out against injustice will have dire consequences for the evangelical church:

Why in church after church after church are we having young people who are having a crisis of faith? Because they are wondering if we really believe what we preach and teach and sing all the time.

Jesus will build his church and it will be a sign of reconciliation that comes through Jesus Christ—the question is “Will that happen with us? And that I don’t know.”

God doesn’t need an American evangelical movement or a Southern Baptist Convention or a Gospel Coalition…all are good and right as long as they are lined up [with] the purposes of Christ, but if they don’t, God will build his church without us. Look what’s happening in Africa and in Asia. The question is whether we will join ourselves to what God is doing in the world.

Moore said although MLK has been dead for 50 years, his message still speaks and the gospel still saves. “The cross is still the power of God unto salvation and the church of Jesus Christ will one day be whole.”
