Demario Davis Dodges $7,000 Fine, Orchestrates $40,000 Donation to Hospital

Children have a special place in Davis’ heart. The married father of four co-founded Devoted Dreamers, a foundation that assists inner-city children through education, ministry, sports, and mentoring. A key goal, he says, is to prevent kids from “falling through the cracks.”

Last summer, Davis partnered with longtime friend and fellow football player Josh Norman to assist immigrant children who’d been released from a detention center in San Antonio, Texas. They provided food and supplies, and the response overwhelmed them. “The people started hugging us,” Davis told USA Today. “The most genuine smiles and hugs. They didn’t know us, didn’t know how to speak the language. But it just showed that a little bit of love can go a long way.”

The treatment of migrants along the U.S. border had been bothering Davis, and his wife, Tamela, urged, “If you feel strongly about it, find a way to do something about it.” After returning from San Antonio, Demario Davis said, “That’s love. That’s what we’re supposed to do with human-to-human interaction, no matter where you’re from, what kind [of] background. There’s only one race. We’re human beings.”

Helping others isn’t “about changing everything,” he says. “None of us can change the world ourselves, but everybody can do their own little part, in their own place, and make the world a better place.”

Doing something is what matters. “We can all sit on social media and comment,” Davis says. “But stop commenting behind screens. Take action.”
