NM Fines Churches $10,000 for ‘illegal and selfish’ Christmas Gatherings

This is not the first time this year that Legacy Church has gone toe to toe with the state of New Mexico. In April, the church sued the state and Kathy Kunkel, who was the New Mexico Health Secretary at the time, claiming its religious freedoms were violated. A federal judge ruled against the church in July.

Calvary Church has also already faced controversy pertaining to the pandemic. Two weeks ago, two former church members started a petition with the purpose of holding the church accountable. The women who created the petition claim that Calvary’s lead pastor is pressuring people to attend worship in person instead of online, and the women also say that the church is not reporting when staff members test positive for COVID-19.

The church responded to those claims with a statement saying it has gone to “extensive lengths and great expense” to comply with public health orders and that it has been forthright with reporting any positive COVID-19 cases among its staff.
