Josh McDowell Steps Down in the Wake of Controversial Racial Comments

Reactions to McDowell’s Stepping Down Are Mixed

While many offered words of support to McDowell’s decision to step away from his ministry responsibilities, others have shared criticism regarding the official statement—though for disparate reasons.

For some, McDowell’s decision is seen as a surrender to cancel culture, as one Twitter comment reads, “It’s so heartbreaking to see even long time (sic) Christian leaders now giving in to this cult!” Another argues, “I hate to see such a drastic response to one comment, which admittedly some were hurt by, but it was meant with no malice…Josh McDowell has been a tireless advocate for the downtrodden for decades.”

On the other hand, others contend that McDowell’s statement and choice to step away from his ministry do not go far enough. One retweet expressed, “While I appreciate an apology, I’ve seen too many that go away & get themselves together & come back fully restored to their positions or ministry without actually changing a darn thing.” Another simply said, “This is not an apology. #fauxpology”

These responses are indicative of a widening gap among Christians with regard to how Christian leaders and organizations should address racial and justice issues in America.

At the time of this article’s release, McDowell’s statement did not disclose whether his move to step away form his ministry and speaking engagement was permanent, or what the process of his return might look like.
