‘The Bible Belt Is Unbuckling’: Evangelical Pastor Weighs in on Christian Nationalism

Nevertheless, Nordstrom is teaching his congregants to reject the politicization of their faith. “We’re Christians because we follow Christ, and not because we’re Americans. And our faith isn’t in the political systems,” said a member of Nordstrom’s men’s bible study.

Nordstrom said that many evangelical pastors have had a “hold your nose and vote for Donald Trump” mentality. “We’re not really, totally on board with his attitude, spirit. But if you give us those kinds of policies, we’ll put up with almost anything — if that makes sense.”

In response, Thompson asked, “Does it make sense to you?” Nordstrom replied with a chuckle, “It does not make sense to me,” adding that “the ends don’t justify the means.”

To conclude her report, Thompson noted the stark differences between these two pastors, pointing out that while Peters marched on the Capitol on January 6, Nordstrom marched with Black Lives Matter. Patriot Church is full of American iconography, and Peters instructs his congregants about how to vote. Life Church doesn’t have an American flag in its auditorium, and Nordstrom sees voting as a “private matter.”

These contrasts are indicative of two very different sets of value within the broader evangelical movement.
