Kamala Harris’ Sunday Morning Address Draws Comparisons to Mike Pence’s SBC Speech

Harris’ video is notable, of course, for the parallels to Pence’s appearance at the SBC annual meeting. Other recent examples of mixing religion and politics from the Republican side of the aisle include the prominent ministry leaders, such as Dr. Al Mohler, John MacArthur, and Franklin Graham, who endorsed Trump.

McKissic explained his views on the proper relationship between politics and the church, saying, “I’m in favor of addressing issues & doing so from a biblio-centric, historical perspective factoring in ‘the black struggle for liberation,’ he said. “We need to stop short of endorsing a candidate or party as being ‘God’s choice.’ Address issues, & respect Individual decision making.”

“I don’t care who does it, I don’t like it,” said another Twitter user, referring to churches platforming politicians. “However, when I have experienced this personally in the context of a black church, it wasn’t partisan. Anyone could state their platform and no one was endorsed.  We would often see candidates from both sides. Still didn’t like it.”

Dr. Anthony Bradley, professor of religious studies at The King’s College in New York City, said, “If conservative evangelical Christians had not been so racist & resisted desegregation in the late 1960s through the late 1980s in VA & across the South, this would not be happening. If there’s outrage, it should about [sic] what evangelicalism’s 1970s+ failures produce in 2021.”
