‘Is Christian Hip-Hop Dead?’ Reach Records President Lecrae Discusses

Lecrae shared about the work it took to help build Christian hip-hop to where it is today, recounting the time he spent playing at youth groups, summer camps, and other stages that didn’t seem glamorous to him. “It was never about success. I was never trying to get to this place — I was just aiming for people’s hearts,” he said.

Lecrae, who has won multiple Grammy Awards, said that those before him paved the way for his career, pointing to Christian artists like Preachers In Disguise, Stephen Wiley, Cross Movement, Grits, and T-Bone.

Now, Lecrae wants new artists to know the road that he helped paved for them, like others did for him. “We mirror the culture of hip-hop in a lot of ways,” he said.

Christian hip-hop artists have the opportunity to thrive and be innovative, but they can’t be worried about what the world thinks of them, Lecrae shared. “Just embrace who you are and love it.”

Lecrae expressed the importance of Christian artists coming together to “elevate this culture, because this culture paints a picture of what God is doing in the world.” To Lecrae, worrying about what the world thinks of you doesn’t allow you to be who God created you to be.

“Go in there and show them, ‘Yes I love the Lord and yes I do this hip-hop thing,’” Lecrae said, because God redeems culture and hip-hop is a culture.

According to Lecrae, Christian hip-hop is going to come back strong in a “whole new way.”
