UPDATE: After Being Singled Out For Criticism, Texas Church Receives Over $21K In Donations

“The unwieldy pronoun ‘Godself’ is an intentionally placed gender-neutral pronoun, in the place where you would expect ‘himself,’” Smothers wrote. “But if one is willing to ignore God’s revelation for how he designed us as male and female, why wouldn’t one eventually ignore God’s self-revelation?”

In an article linked in the newsletter, Smothers admitted that the language on First Baptist’s website had been changed and a statement had been added, saying in part, “That phrasing was written prior to Pastor Barr’s tenure here and he was unaware that it was used on the church’s website. While there is nothing inaccurate about the word ‘Godself’, Scriptures (sic) clearly uses ‘Himself’ in reference to God, and our church has no problem with that.”

“I highlight these examples to show that our work is far from done. In many ways, we have more work to do than when CBMW was founded back in 1987,” Smothers wrote, then turning his attention to fundraising. “That is why I am thankful for your partnership, and am grateful for all who will partner with us in the days to come.”

While CBMW has become a prominent evangelical institution over the past few decades, not all evangelicals agree with their vision for manhood and womanhood or their methods of advancing that vision.

“This week, the CBMW tried to fundraise by attacking authors like @kkdumez and @bethallisonbarr —and weirdly, by attacking the church where Dr. Barr’s husband serves as pastor,” tweeted professor of philosophy Scott Coley. “This is how their system works: they raise the money by fear mongering. Some of us have have (sic) instead taken this as an opportunity to give money to Dr. Barr’s church—which has struggled during the pandemic.”

In an outpouring of support for Barr, many have directed financial donations toward First Baptist Church of Elm Mott in lieu of donating to CBMW.

“I just got off my plane. The first text I received was from my husband. More than $6500 from 80 donors has been given to our church, Barr tweeted. “That is close to paying for a month of our operating budget. We are overwhelmed, humbled, & in awe of you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.”
