TobyMac Releases ‘Promised Land’ Collaboration With Sheryl Crow

Crow grew up in a Presbyterian household, but in a 2013 article said that she “doesn’t subscribe to specific religious rules.” In 2006, she was diagnosed with breast cancer and said it prompted her to begin soul-searching.

“When I was diagnosed with breast cancer, it was kind of a soul-searching time for me, and I realized the one thing that I didn’t have in my life was roots,” Crow said.

The Wall Street Journal reported that Crow restored a church that she purchased on the internet for $5,000 and had shipped to her property in Nashville, Tennessee for her own personal use. “Since I was 21, I’ve always had a strong relationship and an everyday, ongoing dialogue with a higher power,” she said.

The “If It Makes You Happy” singer adopted two boys: Wyatt in 2007 and Levi in 2010. Crow credits God for bringing them all together, sharing with Good house Keeping that the boys “understand that they came out of different tummies. But they also believe, as do I, that God put us together. They know how blessed I am to get to be their mommy. So when they’re mad that I won’t let them play video games, I say, ‘God put me in charge. I’m raising you all the best that I can, and some decisions are not fun.’”

One of the lyrics Crow sings in “Promised Land” reads, “I can feel it in my soul one day; I’ll stand before the throne with nothin’ left but hope in these two hands.”
