Ala. Gov. Wants Answers on ‘Inspiring’ High School Team That Refused to Play on the Sabbath

Morton, the school’s athletic director, indicates the team will accept that offer. He says all the support is welcome—not just for Oakwood but “for any other school or academy that has religious values or beliefs.”

Alabama Gov. Demands Answers From Athletic Association

In her letter to the AHSAA, Gov. Ivey expresses “profound concern” about the team’s “alleged treatment.” She requests answers to seven “very pressing questions,” including how the incident was “allowed to occur” and which employees “were responsible for making this decision.”

Ivey also inquires how the state can “ensure this never happens again,” noting that “few things are more important to Alabamians than their faith.”

So far, the only comment from AHSAA is that “all games at each regional site are expected to be played as scheduled.”
