Fellow Christians have attempted to spread news about Zhou’s work via social media, but those posts are removed quickly. She’s “becoming a well-known case among house church Christians,” notes Bitter Winter. And “there is a risk that authorities would react more harshly this time by having the activist sentenced to a long prison term.”

For years, China has been cracking down on unregistered churches. Officials in some areas even offer rewards to citizens who report “illegal religious activities.”
