Steven Furtick Criticized for Promoting 16-Year-Old Son’s Rap Album About Violence, Sex, and Money

Furtick explained that Elijah wanted to grow his following on YouTube, so he started making tutorials.

Elijah eventually started recording his voice, writing lyrics, and creating melodies with the goal of making an album. “This is the part that inspired me the most,” Furtick shared. “Because even with autotune, letting your voice be heard, even by your own ears, is intimidating. Most people can’t even stand to hear their voice for 10 seconds on an old video on their phone. But you had the courage to conceptualize and execute an entire project – every 808, mix, and melody, you meticulously curated and created, selected and perfected.”

“When I was 16, I was writing Walmart Green Day riffs,” the pastor told his son, saying that he begged someone to record his band. “You, on the other hand wrote, recorded, and produced an entire album yourself, even titling the project from a Smashing Pumpkins lyric, a nod to the 90s I’ll forever cherish.”

Furtick reiterated how proud of and inspired by his son he was, saying, “I’m proud of your project. I’m inspired by your process. I’m grateful for the person you are, and the potential of who you are becoming.” Referencing a friend who died in a car accident, he told Elijah, “I know Shiz is smiling almost as big as I am.”

“Run through the jungle TEEN MACHINE,” Furtick concluded. “The old lion is right behind you.”

Since posting the letter to his son and after some negative comments and criticism, Furtick has disabled comments on the post.
