John Cooper: Christian Left Is ‘Remarkably Silent’ on Good News About Possible Roe Reversal

Cooper asks, “Where are you?” to Russell Moore (who did write about the topic this week for Christianity Today). And he wonders why Thabiti Anyabwile wrote a “20-tweet thread” about Nikole Hannah-Jones discussing “The 1619 Project,” yet has said nothing about Roe.

Finally, Cooper singles out Timothy Keller for posting the “weirdest thread” about abortion 24 hours before the leak but then nothing on the topic since then. Keller had tweeted, in part, “The Bible tells me that abortion is a sin and great evil, but it doesn’t tell me the best way to decrease or end abortion in this country, nor which policies are most effective.” Cooper insists he’s “not a hater” but calls that “the all-time dumbest thing I’ve heard a smart person say about abortion.”

Cooper does commend David French for addressing the SCOTUS leak, even though he’s “not a fan” of his. French, who defends Justice Samuel Alito in a new Atlantic article, tweeted, in part, “…while I want Roe overruled, this draft does not mean the case is over.”

Possible Reasons for the Silence

Cooper points to two possible reasons for this week’s silence by people he sees as being on the Christian left. First, he says, “They want to be liked by the world.” Although they still preach faith in Jesus and concepts such as original sin, “the world gives them a pass” for “not standing in the way of sexual liberation…leftist, humanistic politics.” If the left were to offer any praise for Roe’s potential downfall, “they’re gonna lose the woke cookies” and the world’s admiration, Cooper adds.

Second, he speculates that maybe leaders on the left “don’t hate abortion like you do or like they said they did.” Liberals end up “conflating” issues such as the redistribution of resources, Cooper says. For example, they say, “If we don’t pay for health care for everyone, how can we expect [women] not to kill their own children?”

Cooper says, “I pray that they come out and they say something in the next couple of days.” If they do, he promises to commend them for “taking a punch for the faith.” But so far, it seems like the left is “showing their true colors right now,” he says. “As I’ve been saying…it’s not just a leftward drift politically; it is a leftward drift theologically and ethically.”

Cooper concludes, “It’s time to stop listening to these people and go back to the unchanging foundation of Jesus Christ that we find in the Bible. It ain’t that hard, people!”

On Being Vocally Pro-Life

During the video, Cooper describes pro-life Christianity as a “tradition he grew up with,” nothing that “people in my family fight big-time for the pro-life cause.” His mother, now deceased, used to hand out pro-life literature outside abortion clinics. His parents-in-law were both arrested for peacefully doing the same thing. Now Cooper’s daughter volunteers at a pro-life clinic, and his church has had a weekly pro-life meeting for years.

In the comments section, several people agree with Cooper’s message. One writes, “The silence from the Christians is absolutely appalling. Like they hope this just secretly happens but they don’t want to help in the fight. If we’re not vocally pro-life NOW, then when?”

Another says the reason behind the silence is “Because they don’t seek Biblical justice. Only the kind of justice that the world idolizes: social justice.”
