Steingard sums up his thread with this quote from Max Ehrmann’s poem “Desiderata”: “You are a child of the universe no less than the trees and the stars; you have a right to be here.”

One reply to Steingard reads: “As an ex-evang this gets to my core. Even after so many years of deconstruction, reading and believing that I deserve good things is very difficult. On one level I agree, but there is still that part of me, from the foundation of my childhood, that bucks against it. Thank you.”

Other recent tweets from Steingard offer glimpses into his deconstruction work. On June 22, he wrote: “Instead of an inerrant manual for life doesn’t it just make more sense to read the Bible through the lens of ‘this was written by men a long time ago when cultures were different and there are some pearls of wisdom in there but also yikes they had some stuff to learn.’”

The day before that, he tweeted: “As a Christian I would often look at the claims of other religious as ridiculous and *obviously* untrue. But Christianity has plenty of its own crazy – it was just the crazy I was used to.”
