‘Help Us Protect Ourselves’: After Heist, New York Pastor Wants Gun Access

“He’s a disgusting human being—you can quote me on that,” says Maximo Bragado-Darman of Whitehead, who defrauded him in a housing transaction. When a reporter asked about his income sources, Whitehead said, “I’m in real-estate investment and a pastor. I don’t like digging into all that other stuff.”

Church member Chantelle Vickers tells the New York Times that Whitehead is “very relatable” and “is teaching God.” The bling, she adds, is merely how modern-day public figures “attract people.”

On July 31, Whitehead told worshipers, “Now the world knows our name. It don’t get no bigger than that.”
