When Patrick asked how Tebow became so philanthropic, the athlete replied that his parents, who were missionaries in the Philippines, had an enormous influence on him. “My dad is one of my biggest heroes because he spent his entire adult life helping people that could never do anything for him,” said Tebow. Similarly, his mom loved people extremely well. Tebow can barely think of a time when his mom has said anything negative about anyone. “I think that had such a massive impact,” he said.

It is easy for accomplishments, such as trophies, to feel important when in the long run, they are really not, Tebow observed. Because he has a huge drive to compete, he is thankful to his parents for helping him have perspective on “what really matters.”
