Eastern University on Hold From CCCU After Dropping Ban on LGBTQ Faculty

A former Eastern University professor was the subject of a New Yorker profile in June. Kathy Lee, a political science professor, now retired, taught for 17 years at Eastern and publicly came out as a lesbian earlier this year.

She led a panel discussion on the issue of sexuality last month.

In 2021, a student at Eastern was among 43 other LGBTQ students who filed a class-action lawsuit against the U.S. Department of Education. In it, they claim the department’s religious exemption allows schools, such as Eastern, that receive federal dollars, to unconstitutionally discriminate against LGBTQ students.

Faith Millender, the student, is still part of the suit filed by the Religious Exemption Accountability Project. She identifies as bisexual and queer.
