Tim Allen’s Disney+ Series ‘The Santa Clauses’ Adds Religious Themes

Allen has received flak before for inserting religion into his mainstream programming. In 2017, he said his faith and politics may have led to ABC’s cancellation of “Last Man Standing” (which Fox later picked up). “There is nothing more dangerous, especially in this climate than a funny, likable conservative character,” Allen said. He also faced pushback for comparing Hollywood to 1930s Germany.

Reviews of “The Santa Clauses” are mixed. Some critics say it reminds them of their favorite childhood Christmas movies, while others say its “annoying…attempts to be everything for both kids and their parents [result] in it being for neither.”

One reviewer, who says religious families already have plenty of “faith-oriented” viewing options, writes: “This new direction for the Santa Clause franchise feels like an attempt by Allen to push the property into a weird in-between place that combines the morals and piety of Christian movies and TV shows with the entertainment value and watchability of real media.”
