Kirk Cameron Threatens Legal Action; Libraries Deny They Withheld Access

Cameron told Fox News, “I’m happy that the two libraries changed their decision and will allow my voice to be heard and my book to be read.”

“I hope they realized that their position of denying me a story hour reading was not only unfair and illegal, but that we would all be better off if we listened to each other’s perspectives,” Cameron went on to say, further expressing that he hopes “children from Indianapolis and Scarsdale can learn something about biblical wisdom and the fruits of the Spirit from ‘As You Grow.’”

In response to Cameron’s claim of discrimination, the Indianapolis Public Library said that it never disallowed Cameron from renting a space at the library to host his own event, only that the library is highly selective about the events it officially sponsors and promotes itself.

“We are aware of this room booking at Central Library on December 29th, and understand that the publisher is making the event open to the public,” the library said in a statement. “Because this is not an Indianapolis Public Library event and is instead simply a room booked by a separate group, you would need to visit the publisher’s website or social media, Brave Books, to get more details about the event.”

The Scarsdale Public Library similarly denied the claim that they had disallowed Cameron from hosting a private event at their facility to promote his book.

“It is incorrect to state that the library has changed its position,” Elizabeth Bermel, director of the Scarsdale Public Library, told Fox News. “The publisher and Mr. Cameron were never denied the opportunity to book a room. Rather, they never previously requested to book the library’s meeting room.”

Bermel further clarified that while the library declined the opportunity to sponsor an event for “As You Grow,” they did later receive a request to book a room at the library, which they approved.
