‘The Child Born in Bethlehem ’—Biden Criticized for Not Mentioning Jesus by Name in Christmas Address

Despite the president’s request for a holiday political ceasefire, criticism of his address came swiftly, including in an article published by The Daily Wire

“Biden gave an entire Christmas speech without mentioning Jesus once,” tweeted Mindy Robinson, blogger at the website “Red, White, and F You!” “This is right up there with the time they fell in lockstep in calling us ‘Easter Worshippers’ because these Satanists can’t bring themselves to actually say the word ‘Christians.’”

“President Biden failed to mention the name of Jesus during his Christmas message to the nation,” tweeted conservative commentator Todd Starnes. “He mentioned the Muslims, but he failed to name the Reason for the Season. Nothing triggers the Left like the name above all names.”

School choice advocate Hamlet Garcia tweeted, “Satan never mentions Jesus by name, he is afraid of God and he is afraid of Christians who know how to pray in a way that brings God closer.”

Some criticized Biden’s call for unity in light of the remarks he made last December, wherein he addressed Americans who had not been vaccinated for COVID-19, saying, “You’re looking at a winter of severe illness and death for yourselves, your families, and the hospitals you may soon overwhelm.”

Others criticized Biden’s use of Christian imagery in light of his express desire for Congress to pass legislation providing federal protections for abortion. While Biden was denied communion by Reverend Robert E. Morey in 2019 because of his political stance on abortion, after a meeting with Pope Francis in 2021, the president recounted that the sovereign pontiff declared him a “good Catholic.”

Nevertheless, Fox News personality Sean Hannity remarked that Biden “[bent] over backwards to avoid ‘Jesus,’” adding, “Joe is a no-go on Jesus.”

Conversely, The Lincoln Project, a political action committee formed in 2019 by former and current Republicans to campaign against Trump, tweeted, “Fox News was so obsessed with Trump making it ok to say ‘Merry Christmas,’ but didn’t air President Biden’s Christmas address.”

Others lauded Biden’s address, including professor of politics Andrea Hatcher, who said, “Biden is the kind of Christian leader evangelicals say they want. I have never heard a more overtly Christian Christmas message from an American president.”

“Listening to President Biden deliver his Christmas speech, you can’t help but be struck by his kindness, his compassion, his decency, his humanity,” said actor and filmmaker Rob Reiner. “At times like this, I’m so grateful we have him.”

In the end, it appears many Americans received the president’s words through the lens of their pre-existing feelings about him, largely falling in line with partisan loyalties.
