‘Woke Preacher’ Denied Access to Oklahoma Inmate’s Upcoming Execution

Scott Eizember was convicted of the 2003 murders of an elderly couple in eastern Oklahoma. Last month, the state’s Pardon and Parole Board rejected clemency for Eizember, meaning the governor can’t commute his death sentence to life in prison without parole. In a video for last month’s hearing, Eizember acknowledged he belongs in prison and apologized “profusely to all the victims.”

ActionNetwork.org, which launched a petition to spare Eizember’s life, lists two “issues of concern” in his case. First, he “grew up in a home ravaged by drug addiction and alcohol abuse,” his mom killed herself when Eizember was an infant, and he “suffered from years of alcoholism, anxiety, depression, and suicidal ideations due to the difficulties he faced growing up.” Second, two jurors reportedly “expressed clear bias in favor of the death penalty,” with one saying it “keeps taxpayers from having to support a criminal for the remainder of their life.”
