The Honolulu Department of Planning and Permitting continues to investigate the incident but has already determined that some rockfall barrier fencing was inadequate. The department issued a stop-work order and a notice of violation to the owner of the property directly above Sasaki’s, as well as to his contractor.
Peter Savio, a developer who owns the property above Sasaki’s house, says he’ll take the necessary safety precautions but needs assistance from the city and state. “The guys who own the ridge, we can’t get insurance because no one wants to insure,” he says. “The ridges have no value, so you can’t afford to do what needs to be done.”
