Only a third of Americans say their religious beliefs dictate their views of abortion; and most Christians say the same, with one major exception. Among white evangelical Christians 73% say their religious beliefs determine their views of abortion.

Among religious groups that favor abortion rights, 38% of American Jews said they would only vote for candidates who share their views of abortion, more than any other religious group.

Support for abortion rights is highest among Unitarian Universalists and religiously unaffiliated Americans, the survey found, followed in descending order by Jews, Buddhists, Black Protestants, Hindus, white mainline Protestants, Muslims and Catholics.

Among religious groups that say abortion should be illegal in most or all cases, white evangelical Protestants (34%) are the most likely to say they will only vote for candidates who share their views on abortion.

The survey had a margin of error of plus or minus 0.8 percentage points.
