Cliff College Responds to Edwards’ Comments on Twitter

Since 1883, Cliff College has prided itself on high standards of excellence as a Bible college. The school accepts “people from diverse backgrounds, for mission and evangelism.” Undergraduate and postgraduate programs include theology and missiology. The school also offers a bed and breakfast and gap year programs for those between the ages of 18 and 25.

Cliff College representatives quickly responded to Edwards’ tweet. The school claimed, “The language used is inappropriate and unacceptable and does not represent either the views or the ethos of Cliff College.”

More than 100,000 people have viewed the college’s statement, and another hundred have commented so far. The comments are varied and heated.

“Good to hear that ‘those with differing views are welcomed and challenged,'” one comment read. “So that will include the Conservative Evangelical view which differed from that of the Methodist Church? Aaron has always taught the truth with love and grace, he’s a fantastic lecturer.”

Others called for disciplinary action against Edwards and for Cliff College to request Edwards remove his tweet, with some characterizing Edwards’ remark as “full of homophobia & self justification.”

In a recent reply, the college reiterated its inclusivity: “Cliff College, with the Methodist Church in Britain, is committed to being a safe and hospitable place, where those with differing convictions are welcomed and challenged to live together as faithful disciples of Christ.”

Edwards shared on his Crowdfunder page, “We know that whatever happens (and however little/much money we happen to raise here) God has a plan for us, He has us in His hands, and He won’t let us go.”
