Disgraced Former Hillsong Pastor Carl Lentz Hired by Mike Todd’s Transformation Church

On March 24, 2022, Discovery Plus released a three-part docuseries titled “Hillsong: A Megachurch Exposed,” which dove into the various scandals that surrounded Hillsong Church, including Lentz’s affair and troubling leadership style.

In a later report, former Hillsong New York staffers and volunteers claimed that Lentz’s manipulative, demanding leadership style drove them to mental illness, which included anxiety and panic disorders.

A former housekeeper for the family claimed there were multiple incidents of indecent exposures by Lentz, and the family’s former nanny, Leona Kimes, accused Lentz of “bullying, abuse of power, and sexual abuse.”

Lentz and his wife will give their first interview regarding his time at Hillsong Church in a FX four-part docuseries titled “The Secrets of Hillsong,” which is set to premiere on May 19 at 10 p.m.

Since his firing, Lentz has kept a relatively low profile, posting only once on Instagram since admitting his moral failures. In a September 14, 2022 post, Lentz shared how it has been a “challenging road” for his family, “but we are alive, we are at peace, and thanks to God we are together.”

At the time, Lentz said he is “not sure what the future holds for us, but we do know that we face it as a family and for that I am so thankful.”

The family is now part of Transformation Church.

The nondenominational, multi-campus, multi-generational, multi-ethnic, and multiplying church says they exists to represent “God to the lost and found for transformation in Christ.”

The megachurch’s main campus seats 4,500. In the past four years, Transformation has acquired an estimated $67 million in real estate properties in the surrounding area.

Todd received national criticism last year after he made a sermon illustration depicting Jesus healing a blind man (Mark 8) a bit too literal. In his illustration, Todd smeared mucus and salvia in the eyes of his brother, causing disgusted reactions from the congregation.

Todd later apologized for the illustration, saying that his example was “too extreme and disgusting.”
