‘Take Steps Now’ Against Gun Violence, Says ERLC President to Tennessee Lawmakers

Democratic State Rep. Antonio Parkinson said he appreciates “the pressure” that Southern Baptists are placing on Republican lawmakers. “What’s sad to say,” he added, “is that it has to be something that hits close to home before people understand the gravity of what we’re dealing with.”

Leatherwood, who serves as a church deacon, emphasized that more than 20% of Tennessee residents are Southern Baptists. On Twitter after The Covenant School shooting, he wrote that Americans should never accept the loss of “defenseless, innocent lives” as a reality. He wants to be “a solution seeker” when it comes to reducing gun violence, he added.

Now Leatherwood hopes Tennessee lawmakers do too. “I beg of you to put down the weapons of partisan warfare in this moment,” his letter concluded, “and instead put on the cloak of serious and thoughtful policymaking that will make a real difference for parents, the public, and those suffering from mental distress.”
