In addition to his successful broadcast ministry, Stanley also served as SBC president in 1985 and 1986. He wrote over 70 books that have sold more than 10 million copies.

Stanley and his wife, Anna, divorced in 2000 after more than 40 years of marriage, and Anna passed away on Nov. 10, 2014. Stanley never remarried.

Stanley’s son, Andy, is the founding pastor of North Point Community Church, a nondenominational evangelical megachurch that averages over 35,000 attenders across eight campuses in the Metro Atlanta area.

Stanley stepped down as senior pastor of First Baptist Atlanta in September 2020 at the age of 88. As he handed pastoring duties over to Dr. Anthony George, he told the congregation that he wasn’t retiring. Instead, he would focus the next season of his life on his opportunities at In Touch Ministries.

“I will continue to preach the Gospel as long as God allows,” Stanley said at the time.

As news of Stanley’s passing broke, First Baptist Atlanta posted a message to its website, which read, “We are forever grateful for his enduring legacy of faithful leadership and spiritual guidance as Senior Pastor of First Baptist of Atlanta for over 50 years.”

A memorialization of Stanley can be found at charlesstanley.com. The family is asking that donations be made to In Touch Ministries in lieu of flowers.
