‘I Am Christian. That’s Not What We Stand For’—Taylor Swift’s Political Comments Resurface As She Returns to Tennessee

A conversation with friend Todrick Hall caused Taylor Swift to become a more vocal ally, she said. Hall asked Swift what she would do if her son were gay, which made her “realize that I had not made my position clear enough or loud enough.”

Swift said, “It was kind of devastating to realize that I hadn’t been publicly clear about” her stance for equal rights. “I didn’t realize until recently that I could advocate for a community that I’m not a part of.”

In a letter posted during Pride Month in 2019, Swift urged Tennessee Sen. Lamar Alexander, a Republican, to pass the Equality Act. The legislation would substantially expand discrimination protections on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity. Opponents say it would threaten religious liberty, harm women and girls, and promote abortion extremism.
