Fast-food restaurants such as Chick-fil-A also have been facing backlash for their heavy reliance on drive-throughs, which are widely considered bad for cities and the environment. Several locales have banned or temporarily halted construction of new drive-throughs, citing traffic, congestion, and even rising rates of obesity.
In August, city council members in Atlanta—where Chick-fil-A is headquartered—are expected to vote on a bill that would block new drive-throughs in the busy Beltline area. City Council Member Jason Dozier said he proposed the bill because of recent pedestrian fatalities and injuries. Fourteen pedestrians have been killed in the Beltline area since 2015, Dozier said, adding, “We need to make sure we can design communities around pedestrian safety.”
