Verástegui had been mulling the decision to run for president for some time. In July, he asked for prayer as he considered it. Verástegui has been motivated by his belief that the country’s conservative party “has died and we’re not sure that it’s resting in peace, because it died in a state of disgrace.”

Caviezel has expressed support for Verástegui’s presidential run, referring to him as “the people’s man.”
“In politics, there are no empty seats. We still have an opportunity to save Mexico and build an option that allows us to recover what was lost and the future of our nation,” Verástegui said in a June 8 social media post. “Enough of indifference and passivity in electoral politics. Long live Mexico!”
